About the Role:

The Youth Engagement Worker provides a welcoming first point of contact for young people seeking support. The Youth Engagement Worker contributes to a high quality, early intervention service for young people, their families and community services. They will have a direct role in the engagement, assessment and coordination of care for young people who access headspace Kalgoorlie. The Youth Engagement Worker assists in supported referral of young people to appropriate programs. In addition, the position participates in community awareness raising activities that promote early help seeking and intervention for mental health and substance use.

Duties:

  • Work under the direction of the headspace Manager Kalgoorlie, to provide youth friendly mental health services within the headspace Kalgoorlie centre
  • Provide a comprehensive intake service to young people, community members and professionals seeking services at headspace Kalgoorlie, including receiving and processing telephone and faxed referrals
  • Conduct initial screening assessments with young people and their families in order to provide an immediate response for either external or internal referral
  • Provide psychosocial assessment using the agreed headspace tools, to determine client suitability for ongoing headspace services
  • Deliver evidence-based brief interventions, including group interventions and problem solving, with young people and their families
  • Provide specialist youth mental health support to consortium partners and co-located services.
  • Develop case formulations and care plans
  • Provide case co-ordination to ensure smooth referral transition
  • Promote the headspace service, communicate regularly, to build and maintain collaborative working relationships with health and welfare agencies and the general community
  • Participate in headspace events and activities
  • Attend interagency networking events

Requirements of the Role:

  • Must have: Bachelor level tertiary qualifications in Psychology, Social Work, Youth Work, Mental Health Nursing, Occupational Therapy or other Allied Health, or Behavioural/Social Sciences.

  • Current National Police Clearance, Working with Children Check, WA Drivers Licence, First Aid Certificate

  • Demonstrated experience in working clinically with young people with mild to moderate mental health issues within a short-term intervention program

  • Proven ability to deliver cognitive behavioural interventions, interpersonal psychotherapy and family-based interventions

  • The ability to assertively engage and work effectively with vulnerable young people and their families, including those who may exhibit challenging behaviours
