About the business

Council on the Ageing Victoria (COTA) is the peak body representing the needs and interests of the diverse range of older people in the Victorian community. 

COTA is governed by a Board of Management elected by our members. Our dedicated volunteers and staff continually strive to ensure that the contributions of older people are proudly recognised and acknowledged within our community. We work to create opportunities for older Victorians and to protect their rights.

About the role

The role of the Team Leader is to lead the Community Education and Information Services Team in effectively informing and engaging older Victorians through a range of outreach and information strategies which respond to the key issues and information needs of older Victorians.

Key Responsibilities

  • To provide leadership and promote team effort, collaboration, responsibility and high performance in staff and volunteers;
  • To develop the strategy and operational plan for the team in line with the organisation's strategic plan, the requirements of funding bodies, operating within budgetary constraints;
  • To develop with all staff in the team an individual work plan that aligns with the strategic and operational plan;
  • To regularly monitor and report on the progress of the team in achieving the operational plan;
  • To develop work practices and procedures and provide advice on organisational policy matters and contribute to their development;
  • To negotiate on matters of significance within the organisation with other bodies and/or members of the public; 
  • To provide advice on matters of complexity within the team's responsibility;
  • To support the development of existing and new projects, project funding and business development opportunities;
  • To ensure the participation of older Victorians in all elements of our work;
  • To work with the Organisational Support Team to develop budgets and manage the finances of the team;
  • Fulfil all accountability and compliance requirements for the team's work;
  • Work collaboratively with members of the COTA Federation across Australia to advance the interests of the COTA movement.

Skills and experience

  • Relevant degree in Management, Community development, Health, Social Welfare, Health Promotion or Information Management and/or substantial experience in a relevant field;
  • Commitment to human rights, civic participation and the vision, mission and values of COTA Victoria;
  • Certificate IV in Training and Assessment or willingness to complete this qualification;
  • Demonstrated experience in leading and managing a small team;
  • High level skills and experience in community education and information provision, innovation and strategic service development to diverse populations;
  • An understanding of the governance of not for profit organisations, compliance, and accountability including adherence to organisational policies and procedures;
  • A high level of interpersonal skills to resolve organisational issues, build relationships with stakeholders, develop and motivate staff;
  • A high level of written communication skills including report writing and plain English communication;
  • Skill and experience in project management, budget development and monitoring to ensure that outcomes are delivered in a timely manner and within budget;
  • An understanding of co-design and co-production principles and processes and ability to engage a diverse range of older Victorians in all aspects of the work;
  • An ability to ensure that all COTA Victorian Programs are conducted in line with Access and Equity principles and practices;
  • Current Victorian Drivers' License.
