The Opportunity

In joining the Federal Secretariat of the Australian Medical Association (AMA), you will work with the Public Health team who are responsible for a range of policy responses to pubic health issues of national importance.

Reporting to the Director Public Health, you will conduct research and contribute to policy development, as well as provide policy advice and advocacy on current issues on population and community health including prevention, substance abuse, nutrition, obesity, gender and life-stage health issues and Indigenous health. This role is  responsible for managing discrete projects and campaigns within this remit and is based in Barton, Canberra.

What it Takes

We are looking for degree qualified candidates who have good research and analytical skills with a flair for writing. You will support AMA policy working groups and the AMA President through the development of AMA position statements, briefings and the initiation of related advocacy and lobbying activities.

An ability to work to tight and sometimes shifting timelines, using initiative and displaying sound problem solving skills is essential.

You will also need:

  • an interest in and understanding of the health issues facing Australians.
  • strong written skills to produce concise and incisive reports, positions and media related materials.
  • to demonstrate your ability to work independently, as well as part of a small team, and support collaborative relationships with a range of stakeholders.
  • good knowledge of parliamentary processes.
  • excellent computer literacy in the Microsoft Office suite and capacity to learn new software packages to support our work.

The AMA is the most influential membership organisation in Australia representing medical practitioners and medical students and exists to promote and protect the interests of doctors and the health care needs of patients and communities, while supporting members with services and opportunities.

Situated in the parliamentary triangle the AMA is close to the centre of Canberra and easily accessed via public transport, with great local amenities, park land and excellent coffee options.
