About the business

Katherine Town Council (KTC) is a small Council located in Katherine, Northern Territory. Often called the "Crossroads of the North" because of its location, Katherine is the fourth largest town in the Northern Territory, located 312km south-east from Darwin along the Katherine River.

Katherine has a population of 11,158 people. 

In additional to the daily operations of the Katherine Town Council, which include the functions of rate management and customer inquiries, KTC provides a wide range of regulatory services to the Katherine Community. These services include, Animal Control, Waste Management, Street Lights, Park Maintenance, Road Maintenance, Facilities such as Sports & Showgrounds and others such as the Visitor Information Centre, Public Library, Town Pool, Cemetery, Hot Springs and more. 

About the role

A Sustainability Officer is required to join the Governance team at Katherine Town Council. The Council delivers sustainability programs and projects across areas including waste, trees, weeds and water. The Sustainability Officer will work closely with colleagues in the Governance and Environment teams to plan, develop and implement these projects and provide advice on general sustainability matters.

Key Responsibilities of this role include: 

  • Develop and implement strategic sustainability plans and policies to promote environmental sustainability.
  • Deliver agreed health and environmental services, outcomes and benefits in accordance with Council's Municipal Plan.
  • Undertake stakeholder management and communications, including status reporting, project documentation and media releases.
  • Ensure all customer internal/external enquiries are dealt with in a timely, concise and accurate manner.
  • Develop and implement business cases and funding proposals.
  • High level contribution and participation in budget processes to ensure compliance with Council's governance requirements and plans.
  • Promote cross-functional collaboration within Council.
  • Training of relevant staff.
  • Participating in project teams as required.
  • The provision of a high level of support to the Leadership Team and other Council Departments.
  • Assist in the implementation of the Katherine Town Council Local Counter Disaster Sub-Plan in the event of a disaster.
  • Other responsibilities as shall be reasonably associated with or incidental to the above responsibilities or as shall, in the course of the employment, be agreed between the parties as being or forming part of the duties.

 

LEVEL OF RESPONSIBILITY

  • Exercise high precision occupational skills using various specialised techniques, systems, equipment, methods or processes.
  • Use discretion within standard practices and processes.
  • Problem solving skills which require assessment of a range of options, with elements of complexity to reach decisions and make recommendations.
  • Quantify the amount of resources needed to meet work processes and objectives.
  • Specialist knowledge in a number of advanced skill areas relating to the more complex elements of health and environmental disciplines.
  • An understanding and of relevant health and environment policies and practices and the capability to develop and implement workplace procedures in alignment with policies and practices.
  • Skills to communicate with employees and the public.
  • Write detailed and non-standard reports and correspondences in the relevant fields of expertise.
  • Thorough working knowledge and experience of all work procedures for the application of scientific and administrative skills, based upon suitable tertiary qualifications.

Skills and experience

ESSENTIAL:

  • Demonstrated ability to deliver excellent results and enriched relationships in each key responsibility
  • Current NT drivers licence
  • Knowledge and skill gained through qualifications and experience to meet the requirements of the position.
  • Demonstrated experience and positive outcomes working within the delegations.

DESIRABLE

  • Tertiary qualifications in environment, environmental health, life sciences, sustainability or other related disciplines.
