About the opportunityThe University of Sydney is seeking to appoint a successful and aspirational academic who will
establish a world-leading research program in the field of nanoscience. Candidates should be of high international standing supported by an independent research career and have a strong positive trajectory for their research. They should currently be at a professor level or qualified for promotion to this level.
The John Hooke Chair of Nanoscience will be a teaching-and-research academic appointment and will be deeply engaged in the new Australian Institute for Nanoscale Science and Technology AINST at the University. Candidates with research interests in nanoscience are encouraged to apply and these interests should be aligned with the mission of AINST, “to discover and harness new science at the nanoscale”.
The successful applicant will establish a new world-leading research program leveraging the specialised laboratory and central nanofabrication and characterisation facilities offered by the Sydney Nanoscience Hub SNH and the University’s core research facilities.
To be successful in this role you will have:
- a PhD in the physical sciences or a related field
- a research focus on nanoscale science in one more of the following domains: quantum science, nanophotonics, molecular nanoscience, materials at the nanoscale
- a demonstrated record of outstanding research with a strong publication record in leading high-impact international journals
- a demonstrated record of attracting competitive research funds
- a demonstrated record of leading and managing a successful research program
- a demonstrated capability to drive the strategic development of new research initiatives
- a demonstrated capacity to engage industry and other end-users
- an overall upward trajectory in research productivity and impact
- a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and research training.
This is an opportunity to be involved in building a major multidisciplinary research institute at the University, helping to shepherd the scientific development of AINST and to build the infrastructure, capabilities and vision that will position AINST as a world leader in nanoscale science.
Term and remunerationThe position is full-time continuing and is subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees. A competitive startup package will be part of an offer of appointment. Relocation support and visa sponsorship will be available if required.
