The School of Engineering sits within the Faculty of Science and Engineering and is looking to appoint a senior technician to support our Materials Analysis, Characterisation, and Structural Integrity Laboratory on the Plymouth Campus. This role presents an exciting opportunity for an experienced individual with proven expertise in materials analysis and testing to join a key area of the school supporting teaching and research.

You will join well qualified, skilled, and experienced technicians in the School of Engineering led by the Technical Manager providing technical support for staff and students primarily within the school of Engineering and in particular the specialist area of Materials Analysis, Characterisation, and Structural Integrity (MAC&SI). You will work under the supervision of and support the laboratory’s lead senior technician as part of the mechanical technical team to deliver an excellent experience to student and staff using the laboratory.

Duties will include the preparation, testing, and analysis of a wide range of material samples using specialist equipment to the highest standards for academic research. You will assist academic staff in the delivery of taught programmes to groups or directly to individual students and guidance to student undertaking project work. You will be competent in the use and application of all specialist equipment within the laboratory which includes a range of mechanical testing equipment, optical measurement systems, and through close liaison with the Faculty’s Electron Microscopy Unit’s Scientific Officer, operate their equipment. You will be proactive in your approach to improving and developing the laboratory and the services it provides and show personal initiative and good judgement when faced with complex problems.

Health and Safety is considered of the utmost importance and you will be expected to contribute to the management of risk through Risk and CoSHH assessment and monitoring laboratory activities.

You will have experience of working as part of a team, possess self-determination, integrity, be self-motivated and capable of problem solving with engineering design. You will liaise with both professional engineers and others, therefore excellent written and verbal communication skills are necessary.

This position would suit a person with good practical engineering ability and knowledge/qualifications including materials testing who wishes to specialise in this area.

Qualifications: minimum HND or equivalent, in a relevant engineering discipline.

This is a full-time post working 37 hours per week on a permanent basis.
