Applications are invited from enthusiastic and talented individuals at post-doctorate research level to work an exciting Horizon 2020 funded consortium project, iSCAPE (Improving the Smart Control of Air Pollution in Europe).
The position is available from 15 September 2017 until 31 August 2019 in the area of air quality monitoring and modelling, low-cost pollution sensing, and passive air pollution control through green infrastructure. The work will be undertaken at the University of Surrey’s Global Centre for Clean Air Research (GCARE) in the UK under the supervision of Professor Prashant Kumar.
Project background
The iSCAPE project is funded under the “Horizon 2020 Societal Challenges” scheme. It will see next-generation environmental living labs deployed in cities across Europe to improve air quality and reduce carbon footprints. The project aims to integrate and advance the control of air quality and carbon emissions in several European cities. The aim of the project is to develop sustainable and passive air pollution remediation strategies, policy interventions, and behavioural change initiatives. The overall goal of iSCAPE project is to support sustainable urban development by promoting the sharing of results with policy-makers and planners using local test-cases, and providing scientific evidence ready-to-use solutions.
Your responsibilities
You will be responsible for planning, designing, and performing the field experimental campaigns for evaluation of air pollution control interventions and simulating effects of green infrastructural solutions on air quality at neighbourhood scale. You will also be responsible for assessing air pollution sensor technologies and citizen involvement in the living labs context, together with assessment for matching city needs to adequate passive air pollution control solutions at neighbourhood scale and develop generalised measures for urban infrastructure and related decision makes.
Your profile
We are looking for a researcher with a PhD degree (or who will receive a PhD degree by 1 September 2017 at the latest) in the fields of civil, mechanical, chemical, environmental, or transportation engineering/science, or related engineering/science disciplines. You should have sufficient background knowledge for planning, designing, and performing the field experimental campaigns for assessing pollution reduction potential of passive air pollution measures (e.g. green infrastructure), besides relevant exposure and dispersion modelling activities. You should have expertise in handling air pollution instruments, data collection methods, and its subsequent analysis and interpretation using advanced statistical tools. We are therefore looking for a candidate with proven experience in the area of air pollution monitoring and modelling, with knowledge of dispersion modelling (e.g. ADMS/CFD) and advanced statistical analysis (e.g., R, MatLab). A prior knowledge of air pollution control assessment (e.g. vegetation barriers, green walls) and low-cost sensor deployment of air pollution is desirable. The candidate should be motivated and enthusiastic to work in a multidisciplinary environment and must have experience of communicating findings in top-ranked journals. We also ask for good written and spoken English language skills, and preferably with a UK/EU/International driving licence.
