Applications are invited for Senior Research Technology in the Department of Neurodegenerative Disease, UCL Institute of Neurology under the supervision of Professor Elizabeth Fisher. The focus of Professor Fisher’s laboratory is uncovering the molecular pathogenesis of neurodegenerative conditions mainly through working with novel mouse models. We have been funded to take the first steps towards creating a mouse model of XDP by humanizing this region of the mouse genome, in mouse embryonic stem cells.
The appointee will form part of a team whose primary research focus is on developing novel mouse models of neurodegenerative disease as part of the research project “Genome engineering a mouse embryonic stem cell model of X-linked dystonia parkinsonian”. The post holder will perform molecular biology experiments with a strong focus on DNA cloning, undertake tissue culture including of mouse embryonic stem cells and possibly human iPScells, and other cells including primary cultures, and may be called upon to help manage rodent colonies, including transgenic colonies.
Applicants should have a BSc in a Biomedical subject or equivalent experience and a meticulous approach to practical work and record keeping. Experience with cell culture and molecular biology techniques is essential, as is computer literacy, flexibility in approach and initiative, plus the ability to work effectively as part of a team. A comprehension of basic statistical analysis methods and a theoretical understanding of methodologies for the practical daily techniques is also a requirement. Experience in stem cell or neuronal culture, with restriction cloning and an understanding of neuroscience and neurodegenerative diseases is desirable.
The appointment is available immediately at 0.6 FTE (21.9 hours per week), and is funded by a grant from an American charity for one year in the first instance. Starting salary on UCL grade 7 in the range £34,056 to £41,163 pa (including London Allowance), pro rata.
