Purpose and Main Duties
The successful candidate will teach first term (8 sessions in Autumn term) of the postgraduate module Introduction to Quantitative Social Research, covering for the module convener Prof. Rosie Campbell while she is on research leave. This course is taken by students on the MSc in Social Research and introduces students to quantitative research methods, through hands on experience using the software package SPSS. Sessions are 6-8pm on Mondays, beginning 2nd October. The post holder will deliver lectures and help run practical workshops.
Candidate Requirements
You will have the ability to teach introductory statistics and research methods for social researchers, including experimental and survey design, null-hypothesis significance testing, confidence intervals, t-tests, correlation, regression, and commonly used descriptive statistics. The requirements for selection are listed below:
- Hold undergraduate and/or postgraduate qualification in a quantitative social science discipline
- Experience teaching introductory statistics
- Experience lecturing and running practical workshops
Please note: candidates need to demonstrate competence or significant potential in all areas.
In addition it is desirable that candidates have published in high quality academic journals and hold a PhD in a quantitative social science discipline.

Salary: Grade 7 of the College’s London Pay Scale which is starting rate £57.55 per hour (inclusive of holiday pay) for contact hours worked.
The salary quoted above is based on an hourly rate dependent upon length of serve with the College. This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ which covers preparation; teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course. The College’s London Pay Scale includes a consolidated Weighting/Allowance which applies only to staff whose normal contractual place of work is in the Greater London area. This appointment is subject to a probationary period of 18 months.
