We are looking to employ two consumer advisors to join our Consumer Advisory team within Mental Health, Addictions and Intellectual Disabilities service (MHAIDS) who will support community development and service improvement initiatives within the Central Regional Forensic and Rehabilitation Inpatient Services. 

These positions are 0.6FTE / 24 hours per week and based at Kenepuru Hospital Campus.

Te Korowai Whariki (TKW) is an operational group consisting of both regional and national services. The regional arm includes the Central Regional Acute Forensic Mental Health inpatient Service, Youth Forensic inpatient Service and Rehabilitation and Extended Care inpatient Service. The service has 65 inpatient beds in total, some of which are in purpose built cottages ranging from 1 to 5 bedrooms. The service's focus is on recovery and rehabilitation through providing people with the opportunity to learn new skills, as well as gain independence and empowerment for community living

Since 2001 there has been requirement for consumers to be involved in the planning, implementation and evaluation at every level of Mental Health services to ensure services are responsive to individuals. MHAIDS employs a team of consumer advisors who participate in service improvement initiatives through-out MHAIDs services. As a consumer advisor your unique perspective accessing Forensic Inpatient & Rehabilitation or similar custodial environments will complement the diverse experiences and expertise of our specialist teams.

The role will contribute to a wide range of community development and improvement activities such as:

  • Engaging with consumers, whanau and staff within the Forensic Inpatient and Rehabilitation communities
  • Establish and maintain consumer councils within each of the units
  • Development of ‘Real Time’ consumer feedback and participate in service evaluation projects
  • Actively participate in clinical and other staff meetings to provide a consumer perspective
  • Contributes towards the overall Consumer Advisory team goals and objectives

The ideal applicant will have the following skills/experience:

  • Relevant qualifications in Mental Health support work/Peer Support work
  • Is familiar with the Mental Health Act 1992 and Criminal Justice Act
  • Can demonstrate ability to work across a wide cross section of government, community and consumer stakeholders
  • Can participate in and lead group projects, discussions and focus groups
  • Excellent verbal and communication skills
  • Lived experience of mental health and/ or addiction recovery
  • Lived experience of mental health recovery within a Forensic Inpatient & Rehabilitation or similar custodial environment would be an advantage

Police and Child safety Vetting will be required.
