Location: Wellington
Vacancy number: SDNO9761

Remuneration range $105,951 - $149,578.

At the Department of Corrections our goal is to reduce re-offending, and underlying this is a strong commitment to public safety. Through our strong relationships with those in the public and private sector who share our passion for reducing crime, we are continuing to make a real difference to the lives of New Zealanders.

This is an exciting opportunity to make a unique contribution to that goal and to develop the Department of Corrections Principal Advisor role (Training and Design) into a critical and influential position.

A key part of our efforts to reduce reoffending is our suite of medium intensity therapeutic programmes. These are delivered throughout New Zealand both in prisons and in the community. They are carefully designed to be effective and are delivered by trained programme facilitators.

To be successful we need our facilitators to be highly skilled with the ability to deliver programmes as designed and intended, to an often challenging group. The quality of the training for those facilitators and subsequent development is essential to our success.

That is where you come in. Your primary task will be to work with others to deliver initial training for new facilitators and to offer a structured evaluation as to whether trainees are ready to progress and deliver programmes to individuals in prison and the community.

You will also primarily be involved in the design of training materials, the delivery of additional training, coaching and support for practitioners, and the evaluation of the quality of programme delivery.

You will be part of a small integral team responsible for the design of medium intensity therapeutic programmes, the design of competence and progression frameworks for practitioners, and for the provision of second-line assurance that programmes are delivered as intended and are operating effectively. Furthermore you will provide support and analysis to the operational line. The team is also responsible for the Departmental Youth Strategy. This means that you will need to possess excellent relationship management skills and flexibility to work across team boundaries.

The Department works closely with Maori and connects with our key Maori partners. More than half of the people we work with are Maori so this is a key strategic priority area for the Department and requires someone with strong cultural intelligence. This is a role that makes a real difference in the way we work with Maori, for Maori.

We are looking for someone who is agile, and imaginative.

To be successful you will need

  • Has a minimum of a Master’s degree in Psychology (Clinical or Forensic Psychology and registration in NZ)
  • Be competent to deliver training
  • Able to operate at a Senior level as a Psychologist

The Department of Corrections embraces diversity and is committed to an inclusive workplace. We recognise and celebrate the uniqueness of individuals and celebrate the collective talent of all employees.
