About the organisation

Oranga Tamariki, Ministry for Children are on a journey to ensure that all tamariki are in loving whanau and communities, and they want you to go on this journey with them. Their vision is that New Zealand values the wellbeing of tamariki above all else. They believe that in the right environment, with the right people surrounding and nurturing them, any child can, and should flourish.

The Policy group are building their capability across all their current teams and will ultimately be looking to create a new fourth policy team in order to deliver a large and ambitious work programme.

The work

Under the current Government, the policy work of Oranga Tamariki is going in a new and exciting direction. With line of sight from the Minister to the front line services, it’s critical that the work stemming from the policy group is suited to both audiences. They take a holistic view and their work covers all elements of a child’s care and wellbeing from the time they are first referred to Oranga Tamariki until they are transitioning and being supported out of care. The work the policy group does has a real and practical impact with the focus on making implementable policy.

As well as providing primary policy advice, the group also feeds into the policy work of many other agencies, so the opportunity to collaborate across the public sector is considerable.

About the role:

Oranga Tamariki are seeking four capable policy analysts to initially work across their existing three policy teams, as they build a fourth team. As the work of the group covers the full spectrum of policy work, this environment will provide a very solid grounding in policy, so whether you want to become a subject matter expert, or build broadly on your experience within the policy craft, you will have the opportunity to do so in this role. Day to day, you will be

- Providing high quality policy advice and analysis

- Contributing to specific projects

- Establishing and maintaining key stakeholder relationships across the organisation and the wider public sector

- Representing the Ministry at inter-departmental working groups

About you:

A strong thinker and writer, you will not be shy in sharing your ideas or suggesting alternative perspectives to a particular problem. As a natural collaborator, you will be comfortable engaging with all manner of stakeholders, from senior management to front line and will enjoy working with others to achieve a common purpose. As this is very fluid environment, successful candidates will be comfortable thinking on their feet, and adaptable enough to quickly change focus to meet priorities. Though you will ideally have some level of experience in central Government policy, this does not necessarily have to be within the social sector. You will however, have a fundamental interest in improving outcomes for tamariki.
