  • Great Culture
  • Ability to use any technology to create our clients the best solutions
  • Awesome new office in Central Christchurch

Company culture

Orbica is a specialist location data technology company with an industry edge locally - and increasingly - an international exporter of innovative and disruptive location data solutions.

As a challenger brand, we Orbicans pride ourselves on being pioneers of the location data frontier. We love to do the "too hard basket" stuff through a combination of tech smarts, out-of-the-box thinking and sheer determination.

We're a tight-knit team that thrive on exploring unknown location data territories using open source and proprietary software. If you like a fun, collaborative work environment, as well as opportunities to develop your career and Giant Jenga skills, Orbica may be the fit for you.

The role

Orbica is looking for full stack developer with an interest in data driven visualisation. If you love GIS and the wider geospatial sector, that's a plus, but not essential. You will absorb the world of location data through the skillsets and experience of current Orbicans. We value knowledge sharing so we're looking for a team-player that likes learning new skills and domains and sharing their skills too.

We've got a plethora of super cool projects chalked up: we're spearheading artificial intelligence, satellite technology and data visualisation in the location data industry. You'll be working across a variety of projects with some of New Zealand's big organisations including local/central authorities and private enterprises, with a view to international markets.

You'll need to be a good listener, quick learner, inquisitive, open to ideas, have a "can-do" ethos, a sense of humour, and be adept at developing tailored solutions for tricky problems.  Additionally, you need to be able to experiment and develop creative visual representations of data that take complex information and present it in a user-friendly format.

We partner closely with our clients and value strong collaboration. We need a developer with a client-centric approach who enjoys direct client contact. Agile experience is highly desirable.

Core skills

We would prefer our full stack developer to have up to 5 years' of experience, but frankly, we'd be more impressed by an enthusiastic and inquisitive self-starter than someone who ticks all the boxes. If you think you have got what it takes, apply.

Our ideal candidate will be able to mix and match technologies suited to solve a technical problem.  Some skills are essential though: you must have Client-side experience including:

- Web development, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, ES6 and D3.js (highly preferred).

- Server-side and database experience including PostGRESQL (highly preferred) and one or more backend language e.g. Python, pHp, C#, node.js.

 - Other beneficial skill sets could include .NET, native mobile development, experience with APIs, IT infrastructure design and setup, web design and testing are also desirable.

What else do you bring that can take our client offerings to another level?

To be considered for this role you will need to hold a valid New Zealand work visa or New Zealand residency/citizenship.

If you're our new Orbican, tell us why: send us your CV and a cover letter telling us about yourself, why you are interested in location data and an innovative and forward-thinking solution you have developed that'll blow our socks off.
