Pop-up Globe is a multi-award winning New Zealand company that produces spectacular Jacobean theatre, particularly the works of Shakespeare, in ‘pop-up’ replicas of the second Globe, the theatre Shakespeare and his company built and used.

Pop-up Globe is looking for a Head of Learning to create and deliver a vibrant, inspirational and deep programme of learning that complements and interrogates our world-class programme of live theatre events as well as our unique Jacobean replica theatre.

We want to place learning at the heart of our organisation’s mission, from engaging with primary school age children through to post-doctoral academic research. Some of this activity will take place in our Pop-up Globe theatre and at our headquarters. Other activity will reach out into our communities.

We will also seek to work in partnership with other organisations as well as creating our own in-house programme of events.

The Head of Learning will be able to access extraordinary expertise in the many disciplines of a busy producing theatre, from wardrobe to prop-making, stage combat to acting, directing to movement, voice to scenic design etc. Collaborating with individual experts in different departments will require a keen sense of enquiry and, occasionally, diplomacy.

We are looking for an ambitious candidate with a strong track record of self-starting projects, an entrepreneurial approach, a genuine and deep interest in Shakespeare and early modern theatre, a passion for sharing knowledge through structured events, an ability to produce their own research, and an understanding of the importance of teamwork and being a good team player in a young and busy international theatre company.

Key tasks

- To create a strong and ambitious new department at Pop-up Globe’s Auckland HQ, including developing a business plan and strategy, a network of partners and overseeing/delivering a brilliant programme of events.

- Plan and coordinate an eclectic and exciting learning programme that includes events, seminars, workshops and education packs and that inspires creativity, imagination and professional development

- Put learning at the heart of Pop-up Globe’s approach to Shakespeare and performance and work to deepen and maintain connections with students, teachers and academics at primary, secondary, tertiary and post-tertiary level both nationally and internationally

- Maintain excellent relationships with schools, universities, professional associations, audiences, invited speakers and teachers - Collaborate with different Pop-up Globe departments to ensure that the expertise of our team are used for learning purposes

- Ensure that all Learning Department activities and process meet relevant Health and Safety requirements

- Be a champion of Pop-up Globe, representing it in a professional manner, supporting its philosophy and vision at all times

There may be other duties that develop from time to time that will further the aims of Pop-up Globe.

Skills/Experience

- At least 3 years experience in a leadership capacity in an arts organisation or related arts/culture field

- Ability to create and implement a vision 

- BA qualification in Drama, Shakespeare or closely related field 

- MA or higher qualification in Drama, Shakespeare or closely related field (Desirable but not essential)

- Understanding of school curricula and school processes

- Understanding of tertiary education processes (Desirable but not essential)

- Experience of working in a professional theatre environment in a leadership capacity

- Ability to set and manage budgets

- Able to act as figurehead / ambassador including public speaking where required

- Proven experience of self-starting and successfully delivering artistic or cultural projects

Reporting / Line Management

This role reports to the Artistic Director & CEO. The role is responsible for line managing any future employees / contractors in the Learning Department.

Delegated Authority: None.

Remuneration and benefits

This position will initially be a 0.5 FTE, at 20 hours per week. It is a permanent position, based at Pop-up Globe Headquarters at Ellerslie Racecourse, Auckland. Remuneration will be in the range $55,000 - $63,000 p.a. pro rata, depending on experience. The start date of the position is flexible, but ideally the successful candidate should be able to commence in the post in August / September 2018.

Pop-up Globe is a flexible employer and the days and hours worked will be arranged with the successful candidate. Candidates must hold a valid NZ work visa and be resident in the Auckland area.

Complimentary tickets will be offered once the season commences, and discounts for other tickets across the season will be offered.
