UNIVERSITY LIBRARY

The Hocken Library

The Hocken is one of the foremost historical research Libraries in New Zealand and global interest in our collections is ever increasing. In response, we are working to ensure greater access and the delivery of a broad client-focussed research service. To realise our vision we have a number of entry-level opportunities suitable for those who share our passion for supporting research focussed on Aotearoa New Zealand and the Pacific.

The Hocken celebrates our history, cultures and natural environments. Our collections include archives, publications, ephemera, maps, and photographs and our art collection contains historical and contemporary works. Staff at the Hocken cater to the research needs of academics and students from the University of Otago, as well as researchers from other New Zealand and international Universities and institutions, and independent professional and amateur researchers, all of whom value the diverse nature and depth of our collections.

We have recently implemented a new coordinated researcher services model alongside a programme to increase the availability of collection information and content online. We will be undertaking considerably more digitisation and collection description in order to make the collections more accessible to researchers at a distance.

The Role

Working primarily in Archives, this position also contributes to the provision of a responsive, friendly and professional service to users across the collections.

Key tasks include:

  • Supporting researcher needs both on-site and remotely.
  • Issuing and overseeing the use of materials from the collections.
  • Assisting with collection development and management including preventive conservation.
  • Creating and updating collection records including description, cataloguing and indexing of collection materials.

Your Skills and Experience

  • A University degree, preferably in an area relating to the Hocken's subject specialisation and a good general knowledge of New Zealand and Pacific geography, history and culture.
  • Experience working in a gallery, library, museum, archive or related institution, preferred.
  • An approachable, flexible and adaptable attitude.
  • A strong customer service ethic, teamed with excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • An ability to work with accuracy at all times.
  • Competent in the use of computers, including familiarity with databases and Microsoft Office.
  • The ability to work well as part of a diverse team, and also undertake quality work without direct supervision.

Further Details

This is a part-time (18.75 hours per week), 12 noon to 3.45pm, permanent position.

If you are someone who shares our passion for New Zealand's documentary and artistic heritage, we would warmly welcome your interest.

As a part-time position, the salary range for this role will be the pro-rata equivalent of the annual full-time salary range listed.
