Detail information about job Operations Manager. Terms and conditions vacancy

  • Highly visible influencing role
  • Sanford Ltd - NZ's Largest Seafood Exporter
  • Shore Based Operations Management
About the company:
Having been part of NZ’s fishing history for over 150 years, we are well known as an iconic NZ seafood company. We own and operate a diverse fleet of vessels for inshore, purse seine and deepwater fishing, including vessels for freezing and processing at sea.

Our fleet is supported by a sophisticated shore-based support network, designed to ensure we continue to supply sustainable seafood produced to the highest international standards.

About the opportunity:
We are on a journey to become an Employer of Choice in NZ which requires adapting our culture to ensure the highest health, safety and environmental standards are maintained and in turn our business objectives met. We have also created a structure in our Timaru based deepwater team, to allow a dedicated focus on different roles and responsibilities, ensuring all of our people can perform at their best.

About the role:
This newly created role is responsible for contributing to the development of the deepwater strategy and collaborating with the Vessel Managers and the wider team to deliver to the plan. The person in this role will be the first point of contact for all operational functions by overseeing and coordinating vessel activity. Identifying cross fleet implications and developing effective processes and procedures to address these while sharing the learnings is critical to the success of this role.

With 5 direct reports, the ability to influence, encourage collaboration of ideas, solutions and decision making is paramount. Fostering teamwork, breaking down silos and nurturing a high performance culture are critical objectives. More specifically, this role will include:
  • Overseeing and optimising vessel activity by owning the day to day trouble shooting and problem solving
  • Aligning operational activity with the strategic objectives to ensure we are focus is on the right things
  • Prioritising compliance to all internal and external H&S requirements
  • Championing safety and fostering values

Skills and Attributes:
Ideally seafood experience and especially at Vessel Management level or above would be an advantage, However a broad range of complementary skills and the right attitude are more important. Leaders capable of creating the vision for the future and connecting and engaging people to achieve it, will do well in this organisation.
As there is a high level of liaising with both internal and external stakeholders you will need good management, planning and communication skills and the ability to build effective relationships. It will be a given that you are resourceful, able to multi-task and prioritise and this holds you in good stead to be capable of dealing with pressure and reacting to unforeseen events.
