Who are we?

We help young people on their journey to become capable, competent, and widely experienced registered electricians.

The Electrical Training Company (Etco) is 100% owned by Master Electricians, the electrical contracting industry representative body.

Our mission is to employ, educate, and develop Etco apprentices to be among the most capable electricians in the industry, and we have been doing this for 27 years. Due to an internal promotion we now have this vacancy in Invercargill and look forward to receiving your application.

Our Apprentices are important to us, and our willingness to develop them motivates us to provide excellent learning environments and strong support for the 3.5 years they are in our care.

Who are you?

You are a Registered Electrician looking for the next challenge in your career.

Perhaps you are passionate about using your skills and experience to help others work their way into the industry, or you may be wanting to give back to your industry.

To thrive in this role, you will:

  • be a NZ registered electrician with a current practicing license or the ability to obtain one
  • be self-driven with a strong work ethic and very high integrity for working in a supportive highly autonomous environment
  • be passionate about the next generation of electricians
  • be strongly health and safety focused
  • be experienced in working with ambitious young adults
  • understand challenges apprentices face during their apprenticeship
  • be willing to travel regularly in the Taranaki/Wanganui regions and occasionally further afield.

What can we do together?

Together we will put the Apprentices at the heart of all we do. We will do whatever it takes to get them over the line to qualify. We will be supportive but demanding when we need to be and we don’t shy away from tough conversations.

We will ensure that Electrical Training Company and its apprentices are ‘leaders of excellence’ in the Electrical industry.

Your role as an Apprentice Mentor will be to support this by:

  • developing relationships with industry stakeholders and schools
  • recruiting for and selecting the right people into Apprenticeships in your region using our proven processes.
  • liaising with and supporting Host companies and finding new hosts
  • ensuring apprentices and hosts understand Health and Safety and their responsibility to keep themselves and others around them safe
  • supporting apprentices to ensure they succeed in their study, assignments, night-classes, and records of evidence
  • providing pastoral care… guiding them through their personal and professional growth in an important time in their lives.
  • being their advocate and mentor, look after their wellbeing and getting them through.
