The Office of the General Counsel (OGC), Department of Justice, has specialised knowledge in the legislation administered by the Attorney General. A summer clerkship with the OGC provides a unique opportunity to support the delivery of legal and advice services provided to the Minister and Government Agencies. Some of the tasks you may be expected to complete are:
- undertake legal research and analysis;
- contribute to the preparation of correspondence and formal legal documents;
- provide a range of administrative activities and respond to routine queries and requests for information;
- assist teams in the delivery of legal matters and projects; and
- participate in meetings, conferences with stakeholders, court attendances and other related activities.
You will have hands-on involvement in a range of work as you rotate across up to four teams within the OGC:
Commercial and Transactional team provides legal advice on a wide range of matters including commercial contracts, agreements, property matters, copyright and memoranda of understanding.
Inquests, Inquiries and Representation team assists and provides representation at coronial inquests and inquiries. The team also represents witnesses before Independent Commission Against Corruption and various other inquisitorial bodies.
Litigation and Public Law team provides advice, and is involved in the management of litigated proceedings, relating to various criminal, tort and civil/administrative law matters. The team also advises the Attorney General in the consideration and processing of various legal applications.
Open Government, Information and Privacy team responds to subpoenas, summons, and statutory notices/orders served on the Department or on Department personnel. The team processes applications and provides advice under the Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009 and the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998.
The summer clerkship may also include an ongoing project with the Legal Management and Administration team which supports the whole-of-Government legal services coordination.
A summer clerkship with OGC is suited to students who enjoy working in a fast paced and dynamic workplace that deals with a variety of issues, have excelled in a variety of academic and non-academic fields, and are interested in pursuing a career in government or public law.
Interviews will be conducted in August/September 2018. Only candidates who are short-listed for interviews will be contacted.
Who can apply?
Applicants should be in their penultimate or final year of a law degree.

- A covering letter (not exceeding two A4 pages) which includes:
- A short statement of no more than 200 words as to why you would be an ideal candidate for the OGC Summer Clerkship Program;
- Details of how you meet the four key focus capabilities of the role, as identified in the Summer Clerkship Role Description; and
- An indication of your preferred functional group(s) within the OGC (noting that successful applicants will be rotated through a number of functional groups during the clerkship).
- A CV (not exceeding two A4 pages) which contains contact details for at least two referees.
- Your most recent academic transcript.

The Interview
Summer Clerks will be recruited based on merit selection. To ensure that this process is equitable, interviews are formal, with each interviewee being asked the same set of questions. Interviewees may also be asked to prepare a written response to a hypothetical problem.
