Your role

 

The Navy is a great place to learn to cook and establish a career in catering. The training you'll receive is highly respected in the civilian world, and the well-equipped kitchens (galleys) you work in could be anywhere from a Navy base to a warship or submarine.

 

Your main responsibility will be to prepare and serve food for Navy personnel, including meats, vegetables, sauces, breads, cakes and desserts. High standards are essential and you'll take great pride in the preparation of foods according to nutritional, dietary and cultural needs.

 

Your duties will also include:

 

  • menu planning
  • calculating the volume and type of provisions required
  • compiling provisions orders to meet requirements
  • managing budgets, and
  • operating and maintaining galley equipment.

 

As a Navy Chef working at sea you will also be a member of your ship's crew, carrying out seamanship tasks in the following capacities:

 

  • Ships medical emergency team
  • Stores party
  • Flight deck team
  • Ceremonial duties

  • Fully-paid trade training
  • Once trained, starting package approx. $59,700 p.a. plus superannuation

  • Some of your time will be spent at sea

 

Entry Requirements

 

  • At least 17 years of age
  • Australian Citizen
  • Year 10 completion with passes in English and Mathematics (Science also desirable)
