About the Role
This is a great time to be joining St John Ambulance Queensland as we continue to build a 'best in class' Event Health Services function. While the majority of our needs are in SEQ, we are also interested in candidates who can supplement our volunteer resources in all major regional QLD centres.
As a casual Event First Responder you will be:
- engaged on a casual basis to meet event operational and client requirements,
- joining a dedicated team to help deliver professional, comprehensive, responsive, and customer focused clinical first response service offerings to event clients, and
- providing support as required to natural disasters and other emergency relief efforts.
Duties and Responsibilities
St John Event First Responders are first contact health workers who:
- Resource the state-wide St John Event Services team to provide out-of-hospital health care services at public, major and commercially contracted events
- Provide health care services and programs in accordance to St John clinical scope of practice to contracted industry clients
- Provide front-line first aid and out-of-hospital emergency and non-emergency care and clinical support for sick and injured people
- Work collaboratively with the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) and other health care / emergency services personnel to provide quality patient-centred care
- Accurately assess and document patients’ health and medical needs to determine and implement appropriate care in line with St John policies and procedures
- Within you scope of practice, make significant clinical decisions in varied and often complex environments to provide appropriate clinical treatment
- Support the St John disaster response and recovery capability as required under government agency direction and coordination (e.g. fire, flood, and cyclone)
To be successful in this role your will need
Clinical Qualifications
- Minimum requirement is a current certificate in First Aid and CPR (First Aider)
- Certificate II in Emergency Medical Services is desirable (First Responder)
- Higher clinical qualification / education / training in a health care or medical services field is highly desired (e.g. Certificate III in Basic Health Care, Certificate IV in Health Care (Ambulance) or undertaking tertiary studies in a Bachelor of Paramedicine, Paramedic Science, Nursing or Medicine)
Licences
- Blue Card and Criminal History Check (current or ability to obtain)
- Open Class Code C driving licence
- Collect specimens for drugs of abuse testing certificate (or equivalent) is desirable
- Any other licences and authorities to meet role/contract/client/legislation requirements
Skills and Experience
- Practical health services clinical skills consistent with professional training and scope of practice
- Health care work experience in public or community event environments and/or industrial or mining environments
- Demonstrated ability to work under pressure in field or operational settings
- Strong understanding of professional boundaries and empathy for clients with a disability or medical condition
- Strong communication and interpersonal and negotiation skills including ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, relatives, health professionals, members of the public and other emergency services to ensure the best possible care for the patient is achieved
- High cultural awareness and understanding to enable treatment and management of clients from all backgrounds
- Demonstrated experience in and commitment to a volunteering organisation
- Functional English literacy to enable understanding and interpretation of procedures / instructions and to prepare / review written documentation
- Strong organisation, coordination, time management and record-keeping skills
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team – promoting a supportive and cohesive work environment
- Willingness and flexibility to travel to various event venues and work outside normal weekday daytime hours when required
- Strong commitment to maintaining a healthy, safe & inclusive workplace for all
Conditions of Employment
- Working hours are casual – minimum 3 hours per engagement - nominate availability using cloud based Event rostering module
- Attractive hourly rate plus employer superannuation as per legislation
- Uniform, event equipment and first responder resources are provided
