Chief Paediatric Registrar (or Paediatric Fellow)

The Northern Hospital Feb 2019 - Jan 2020

Northern Health provides healthcare to a population of over 580,000 people in Melbourne’s rapidly growing northern growth corridor.

The Paediatric Department is a vibrant, busy and cares for general paediatric and neonatal patients.  The department has a 22 bed Children’s Unit which includes 4 Paediatric Short Stay Unit beds. There is a 2 bed Paediatric High Dependency Unit (HDU) which is attached to the adult intensive care unit.  The Neonatal Unit (18 cots funded) provides high dependency neonatal care and is a level 5 capability which provides 24 hours and 7 days neonatologist cover, TPN, chest drainage and ROP screening. There are more than 3600 infants born annually by the obstetric service.

The Emergency Department is the busiest in Victoria and 20% of attendances are paediatric patients.  The hospital has a busy separate Paediatric Emergency Department staffed by a fulltime Emergency Paedatric Specialist, several sessional Emergency Paedatric Specialists, paediatricians and emergency paediatric registrars.

There are 5 general paediatric consultants, four dual trained consultant neonatologists.  Visiting specialists provide outpatient services in respiratory medicine, neurology, genetics, allergy and rheumatology. There are seven paediatric registrars plus one senior resident and seven junior residents who provide 24 hours cover.

Northern Health is committed to medical education & training through the Teaching, Training & Research Precinct - a joint venture with The University of Melbourne, La Trobe University and the Victorian and Commonwealth Governments.

This position is for an Advanced Trainee in General Paediatrics (preferably second or third year advanced trainee). This Chief Paediatric registrar or Paediatric Fellow will have leadership and administrative responsibilities in addition to clinical duties, thus the role would be an excellent stepping stone to independent practice. -               Supervision and support for junior medical staff

-               Supervision of morning clinical handover

-               Assistance with audit and quality activities

-               Opportunities for research
