With a staff of over 4,500 and an annual operating budget of over $270m RCH has an international reputation as a centre of clinical excellence and is a state-wide teaching, training and research hospital providing tertiary, secondary and primary infant, child and adolescent health services. The Paediatric Orthopaedic Spine Fellow becomes part of an established spinal surgical team at the Royal Children’s Hospital caring for the full range of spine conditions in Paediatrics including: adolescent idiopathic, neuromuscular, syndromic and early onset scoliosis, trauma, tumour and infection. Surgical conditions extend from Occiput to Coccyx with all major surgical approaches including extensive experience in anterior spine surgery. The clinical load includes approximately 1500 spine patients per year through our outpatient clinics and 200 spine procedures per year. There is growing use of emerging technologies including: growth rods, navigation, minimally invasive techniques. The unit is actively participating in research including areas of world leading innovation.
The team includes seven consultant surgeons, a specialised nurse coordinator, specialised physiotherapist, and a soon to be appointed research coordinator.
The clinical load includes some exposure to general paediatric orthopaedics and trauma. Consequently, spine surgery is taught within the wider paediatric context.
The ideal candidate for the fellowship would come with some basic experience in paediatrics and spine surgery and a future interest in managing paediatric patients with spine deformity.
