Information sessions

The Department of Justice and Regulation invites you to an information session about the current prison officer opportunities at Marngoneet. You'll hear from current officers and be able to ask them any questions you have about the role. Recruitment staff will also be present to handle any queries you have about the selection process and training program.

Due to expansions and internal promotions, we are recruiting casual prison officers for Marngoneet Correctional Centre, based in Lara near Geelong.

Starting your career as a casual prison officer at Corrections Victoria

  • work in a large range of different areas within the prison
  • receive eight weeks full-time paid practical and theoretical training covering a range of activities from self-defense to culture awareness
  • give your availability to work based on our two-week rotating rosters. Also be offered short notice shifts
  • receive penalty rates working evening and weekend shifts on top of your hourly wage
  • apply for other opportunities within Corrections Victoria, including permanent positions as they arise.

 

About Marngoneet Correctional Centre

The Marngoneet Correctional Centre is designed to reduce offenders chance of re-offending offering a number of rehabilitation programs

  • Offers a number of rehabilitation and vocational programs to assist prisoners on reintegrating back into society
  • It is mandatory for prisoners to work whilst in Marngoneet, where prisoners gain structure and routine, and be reintegrated back into society once released
  • Shapes social interaction, where prisoners are provided living units as opposed to cells.
  • Offers vocational services that increase the chance of prisoners employment upon release including TAFE and working in specific industries

 

Duties and responsibilities

As a prison officer with Corrections Victoria, you are a positive role model to the prisoners.  Aiming to give prisoners the best chance to become a contributing member of the community upon their release.

Your tasks will include:

  • providing a safe and secure environment for prisoners, your team-mates and visitors
  • being sensitive to the needs of people from a diverse array of backgrounds
  • assisting in achieving a prisoner's personal and professional goals
  • conducting regular patrols, searches and security-related exercises
  • being respectful towards not only your colleagues but also the prisoners, treating prisoners the way you want to be treated is vital.

Who we are looking for

We hire from a range of different industries, backgrounds and age brackets. Some of our top performing and well respected prison officers are aged in their 50s and 60s. Therefore, mature-aged candidates are also encouraged to apply!

We look for candidates who:

  • have strong verbal communication.  This is the strongest weapon our prison officers have - having the ability to de-escalate a situation through your negotiation and verbal reasoning skills is vital (as opposed to de-escalating a situation with force or power tactics)
  • are empathetic, non-judgmental and have cultural awareness
  • are professional, have integrity and maturity
  • have sound conflict management and problem-solving
  • are self-confident and
  • take initiative, ownership and accountability.

Furthermore:

  • You must also have full working rights in Australia (be an Australian Citizen, an Australian Permanent Resident or a New Zealand Citizen with permanent working rights at the time of your application).
  • You also must be available to work full time business hours for the eight-week paid training (commencing Monday, 8 October).

New facial hair policy

  • All prison officers will be required (subject to a small number of exemptions) to be clean shaven for the purposes of wearing a breathing apparatus if required in an emergency.
  • Therefore, beards will no longer be permitted or moustaches that interfere with the seal of a breathing apparatus mask.
