Due to continued growth, the Institute for Public Policy and Governance (UTS:IPPG) has a new vacancy for a dynamic and analytical Manager, Local Government Strategy and Business Improvement to join our team. With a focus on leading project teams to complete innovative research and consultancy projects, this position takes a key role in designing, managing and delivering high quality project outputs.

About the Institute
The Institute for Public Policy and Governance (IPPG) at the University of Technology Sydney is a leading group of researchers and practitioners in the areas of public administration and policy, social research, stakeholder engagement, and leadership.

We undertake applied social, behavioural and academic research, policy advisory, graduate education and professional development training.

The IPPG team works closely with and maintains extensive professional networks within the university and with governments; industry; not-for-profit and community-based organisations across Australia and internationally.

About the role
As the Manager, Local Government Strategy & Business Improvement at IPPG, you will have a leadership role in advising local government clients on service delivery, corporate planning, business improvement and strategic and social planning (including social impact assessments). You will oversee, lead, and deliver a wide range of projects, in support of the Institute and University's strategic direction.

You will undertake business development initiatives, including preparation of funding and commercial tender proposals, consistent with IPPG's objectives.

As Manager, Local Government Strategy and Business Improvement, you will provide leadership by modelling productive practices; delivering, promoting and encouraging excellence, open communication and collaboration.

Day to day you will be responsible for:

  • Securing consultancy projects to an agreed annual target through grant applications, competitive tendering and business development activities
  • Developing fit for purpose, innovative methodologies that engage clients in co-design of strategic solutions
  • Delivery of work in a manner that builds the capacity of local government and delivers robust strategy and business improvement outcomes
  • Delivery of high quality project outputs including professional standard reports, presentations and conference papers
  • Managing client relationships
  • Keeping up to date with technical developments, legislative and regulatory changes and current best practice in local government
  • Managing and supervising colleagues to successfully deliver projects
  • Leading and delivering a number of project concurrently.

To be successful in gaining the role you will have:

  • Good communication skills, including strong written communication skills and the ability to deliver presentations in a training environment and in meetings
  • Capacity to lead community engagement activities as part of projects, such as focus groups and interviews
  • Good time management, ability to multi-task and priorities competing tasks
  • Previous experience working in a commercial consulting environment
  • An understanding of the context of local government social planning, service design and/or delivery
  • Understanding of the industrial and risk context within which local government operates
  • The capacity to work across a range of policy and function areas, which require a high level of generalist rather than specialist expertise
  • The ability to manage the joint responsibilities of leading a consultancy team while having substantial project delivery responsibilities and managing multiple projects concurrently, with competing deadlines
  • Financial literacy
  • Demonstrated knowledge of social research and policy development processes and evaluation methodologies
  • A degree in planning, urban planning, social science or equivalent.

Remuneration & Benefits
Base Salary Range: An attractive and competitive salary package will be negotiated with the appointee.(SSS1)

This role attracts 17% superannuation in addition to the base salary.

This position is full-time and appointment will be made on a continuing basis.
