The Job Opportunity

The Communications, Marketing and Public Affairs unit is responsible for developing and building the Museum’s profile and brand to engage key target audiences – nationally and internationally.

The Communications, Marketing and Public Affairs unit:

  • develops, implements and evaluates media, social media, marketing and communications strategies to promote the Museum brand nationally and support the strategic direction of the organisation.
  • works collaboratively with relevant Museum business units to develop, implement and evaluate promotional strategies for individual Museum programs and events.
  • manages productive and positive media relationships.
  • provides strategic and anticipatory marketing and media advice to the Museum’s Executive, Council and senior staff.
  • monitors and analyses media, audience and market data, providing advice to the Museum’s senior management team.
  • maximises the use of social media and emerging technologies to promote the National Museum of Australia, its events, programs and collections.

The Public Affairs Manager is responsible for:

  • promoting the Museum to a wide audience through local, regional, national and international media outlets.
  • developing media strategies, including media releases, for exhibition launches, major acquisitions, events and other activities as required.
  • working with the Program Manager, Communications, Marketing and Public Affairs to formulate, implement and manage the media liaison program for the National Museum, focused on maintaining and strengthening favourable public attitudes towards the Museum.
  • establishing and maintaining media contacts with journalists, producers, and photographers.
  • assisting the Program Manager, Marketing, Communications and Public Affairs in advising the Museum’s Executive management team on public relations implications of organisation policy and program decisions.
  • managing budget and staff resources as required.

What will the successful candidate bring to the role?

The successful candidate for this position will have proven experience working in a small creative team. Ideally, the candidate will have extensive experience in media relations and/or marketing at a strategic level. Experience as a journalist highly valued. Capacity to work in a dynamic working environment is essential. The candidate must be able to use judgement, think strategically and have a proven track record of delivering quality outcomes.

Selection criteria

Applicants must respond to each of the following selection criteria in their application:

1. Extensive experience in media and/or public affairs. Experience as a journalist highly valued.
2. Demonstrated ability to develop, implement and manage media communication strategies across multiple media platforms, using a broad range of public affairs tools. 
3. Proven high level communication, writing and presentation skills. 
4. Demonstrated ability to think strategically, particularly in regard to managing complex high profile issues at short notice. 
5. Demonstrated experience in developing and maintaining strong links with external and internal stakeholders. 
6. Demonstrated experience to work under pressure, on multiple projects simultaneously and to meet deadlines
