About the opportunity

Our Water Resources section is a multi-disciplinary team of hydrologists, water engineers and hydrogeologists.  We are part of a large infrastructure team working on a wide range of highways, rail, urban development and aviation projects. We are industry leaders who continually partner with our clients on some of the largest infrastructure projects across Australia, New Zealand. We also work on individual flood risk management and drainage solutions for clients.

Working as a local team and also as part of a broader ANZ team of surface water engineers, we carry out 2D flood modelling, hydrological modelling, catchment yield assessments, dam sizing and dam-break assessments, drainage design, culvert and bridge sizing, flood impact assessments, flood risk solutions, tunnel flood immunity solutions, urban drainage management. As well, we work within a global network of over 2,000 water resource practitioners across 50 offices around the world.

Our team adds value and contributes to our client’s success for international and local projects in:

  • Flood management for linear infrastructure
  • Mining and oil and gas
  • Dams (urban water supply, irrigation and mining)
  • Water supply and water resources management
  • Flood risk management

Key Responsibilities

The role will include the following:

  • Project task leadership and delivery of transport-related flooding projects including:
    • 2D flood modelling and hydrology
    • bridge / culvert and major transverse drainage design for all phases of design
    • leading small design teams (up to 4) including 12d designers and CAD drafters
  • Dam break analysis and consequence assessment
  • IQQM/Source modelling
  • Delivery of rainfall-runoff analyses, statistical analyses, GIS mapping, water balance modelling, hydrological and hydraulic modelling.
  • Collaborate with the WR team through managing your own workload and delegating effectively to junior staff to meet deadlines.
  • Support business development activities, developing client relationships and writing proposals.
  • Mentoring of junior and mid-level engineers.

About you

The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience across a range of flooding and water resource fields, possess excellent communication skills, and be able to work effectively individually and as part of a team.  In this role you will have the opportunity to regularly work alongside professional consultants from a range of other disciplines as well as national and global water resources experts. 

This role is integral to the success of the engineering work within the Queensland Water Resources team and requires a self-motivated, proactive professional with attention to detail. This role provides an opportunity for a mid-range engineer to progress towards technical leadership as well as contribute to business strategy and growth through development of long-term client relationships and writing winning proposals.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

  • Degree in civil or environmental engineering or science with post graduate qualifications or experience in hydrology.
  • Member of professional body and be a RPEQ or CPEng chartership.
  • Dam break/consequence assessment and failure impact analysis
  • Strong technical knowledge of surface water engineering and/or hydrology principles.  Technical areas of strength might include:
    • Hydrologic or hydraulic modelling and analysis
    • Flood studies and floodplain risk management studies
    • 2D flood modelling (TUFLOW and MIKE-21) and hydrology and confident in determining the appropriate modelling approach
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills, including demonstrated competence in complex mathematical problems
  • Strongly developed writing skills, leading to an ability to communicate clearly by written means
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability in working well in teams

Desirable Skills

Key distinguishing skills and experience include:

  • Masters (MSc) degree in hydrology or related discipline
  • Statistical hydrology
  • Flood modelling and floodplain risk management
  • IQQM/Source modelling
  • Dam break and failure consequence assessment
  • Proficient in the use of the Goldsim
  • Mine water management experience
  • Proficiency with GIS (ArcGIS suite) applications
