Calderys is a global refractory solutions company manufacturing refractory products for high temperature industrial processes. Australian operations are based at Unanderra, where our plant manufactures alumina monolithic refractories for customers in sectors including iron & steel, aluminium, cement & foundry.

The successful candidate will lead, support and develop all aspects of Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) and be responsible for developing and promoting the company’s EHS policies and procedures. The role also encompasses the coordination of all general training requirements. This is a hands-on role and Calderys believes in Visible Felt Leadership so it is essential that you are able to engage and work with employees, contractors and third parties, showing leadership, drive and initiative to effectively coach and mentor all walks of life.

This newly created position is currently shared between the Operations Manager and the General Manager who the role will report to, and we have the benefit of a global team to draw on for support and guidance. Functionally the role has dotted line reports into China and Singapore.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Developing a strong and sustainable safety culture by raising awareness through effective coaching and mentoring
  • Implementation of a 5S methodology and approach to EHS
  • Creating a site based EHS business plan in cooperation with the Operations Manager for the long term improvement of working conditions and safety
  • Ability to conduct value adding audits, safety inspections and safety interactions.
  • Maintaining and expansion of the Quality Management System
  • Ownership of Quality audits and ongoing accreditation
  • Coaching the Team to effectively undertake Safe Observation walks and hazard identification assessments
  • Maintaining the Corporate EHS platforms and use data to analysis emerging trends and meet monthly reporting requirements to APAC regional management 
  • Training staff in all company EHS policies and procedures as well as creating a skills matrix for assessment of training requirements for all employees.
  • Coordinating all non EHS related training for the general development of staff
  • Maintaining, developing and reviewing of company’s safe work practices and procedures such as developing Standard Operating Procedures and task based Risk Assessments.
  • Initial response, analysis and investigation of any work related injuries.
  • Return to Work coordination and liaising with third party RTW companies
  • Advising management of any changes to local EHS legislation whilst conforming to global group requirements

 

You will have the following profile of skills and experience:

  • Experience in a Health and Safety field within a manufacturing or industrial setting
  • Tertiary qualifications in Occupational Health and Safety as well as Training and Assessing
  • Proven coaching and mentoring experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as being comfortable presenting to diverse groups.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously and work under pressure to meet deadlines
  • Initiative and the ability to work unsupervised
  • Experience with a behavioural based approach to Safety
  • Knowledge of the 5S principles and their implementation
  • Experience within a large multifaceted organisation with high demand overseas reporting requirements.

Some overseas travel will be required.
