About the role
The role of API Product Owner is to create and manage the API proposition for Mercer, including the developer experience end to end (for both internal and external developers). This includes managing rollouts of new API’s across Mercer as well as our clients. The role will play a large part in Mercer realising its digital strategy goals and will form a key part of transforming the way we do business.
 
This role is also responsible for the successful creation, ownership and delivery of the API roadmap, and, while not a revenue facing role, will drive the commercialisation of the API’s through effective product ownership and lifecycle management, stakeholder management and commercial focus.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Managing API proposition for Mercer, including creation, ownership and delivery of API roadmap
  • Ownership of API framework and approach to ensure a consistent delivery of APIs for both internal and external developers
  • Delivery of agreed APIs in line with roadmap through effective management of delivery teams, testing, documentation etc.
  • Creating an API first culture, initially focused on internal development practices with a view to creating a developer proposition for external developers
Additionally you will have: 
  • Prior API experience is a requirement for this role
  • Demonstrated experience leading software delivery in an agile environment
  • Background and experience in one (or more) object oriented, modern programming language (Java, NodeJS, GoLang, Ruby, etc...) preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a Product in a software environment ensuring commercial outcomes can be met
  • Previous experience working in financial services or retail environment would be preferred but is not essential
  • Ability to work with customers to understand and model customer outcomes
  • Matching business requirement to technology outcomes
  • An understand of best practice and processes within the API/Microservice practice
  • A solid understanding of the non-technical aspects to delivery across internal and external stakeholders (e.g. stakeholder management, architectural approval, risk management, operational acceptance)
  • Proven ability to influence relevant internal partners (e.g. web/ app team, technology) to adapt their practices for APIs
