Our business is seeking a suitably skilled and experienced person in the role of Field Technician . 

This role is responsable for the following

  • Coordinate and supervise preparation of research materials and activity in the office/lab. Including seed and fertiliser preparation, seed drill calibration, inventory, organisation, packaging, field layout and all associated manual and computer generated lists, labels, maps, stakes and books for yield trials, experimental production and nurseries.
  • Calibration of spray equipment for accurate application of agrochemical. Maintain chemical store chemicals manifest, and chemical disposal.

Assist with organisation, coordination, set up and

execution of a trialling and chemical screening plan as per the defined objectives of developing and improving  cultivars,  aimed at increasing productivity and reducing the cost of production.

  • Assist as required in the management of pedigree seed production
  • Conduct phenotyping assessments on breeding/

spray trials and other scoring on trial plots

Conduct controlled environment operations associated with the breeding program including crossing,seed multiplication and phenotype testing  

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Technical accreditation (preferable a bachelor degree) in Science, Agriculture, Horticulture or closely related field of study.
  • Experience in field based agriculture research. Graduates encouraged to apply. Experience in planting, in-season crop management and harvesting research trials. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of chemical handling and application
  • Comfortable with multiple forms of technology such as laboratory instruments and field services
  • Knowledge and understanding of plant breeding principles would be an advantage
  • Knowledge of field crop production and field/research equipment
  • Good oral and written communication skills, effective interpersonal skills and an ability to be lead and work within a dynamic team
  • Good observation skills and a high level of attention to detail and accuracy
  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite, Tablet and Smart Phone based software with some knowledge of databases and statistics
  • Willingness to mentor and supervise temporary/casual staff in field related activities
  • Demonstrate the ability to prioritise and balance daily tasks with defined time constraints
  • Enjoy working outside in varying climactic conditions and travelling to different growing regions across Tasmania.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo a Criminal History Background/Police Check as a mandatory part of the process.
