AFL SportsReady is an independent, not-for-profit company, established in 1994, which is dedicated to helping young Australians to develop careers through traineeships and educational opportunities.

We have kick-started the careers of approximately 13,000 young jobseekers, including over 1,500 Indigenous Australians, and helped develop over 700 sporting organisations and other businesses across Australia.

Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander program, Warumilang, represents the support and opportunities created for Indigenous people through quality education and employment. We focus on strengthening relationships, promoting respect and creating employment and education opportunities for young Indigenous people. We have kick-started the careers of over 1,500 Indigenous trainees since 2000.

AFL SR’s is a National company with around 80 staff and trainees located all across Australia, and a head office based in Melbourne.  The South Australian office is located in Adelaide, within the Tennis SA complex, right next door to Adelaide Oval.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The purpose of the Mentor and Field Officer role is to support the safe and successful completion of a case load of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander trainees.  In addition to providing employment related guidance, you'll provide mentoring and cultural support for young people, and play a key role in engaging with local community on behalf of AFL SR.

A day in the life of this role could involve visiting your trainees at workplaces, engaging with host employers to check in on progress, completing necessary administration and notes, and undertaking community engagement and promotion activities.  It's a diverse and rewarding role, that would suit an organised, resilient and supportive person who is keen to support young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to thrive through education and employment.

The key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Mentoring and field officer support: Provide mentoring and employment support to a case load of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander trainees within the workplace setting.
  • Host employer support: Engage with current host employers to maintain positive working relationships, provide advice and guidance, and to support the completion of traineeships.
  • Business development and promotion: Provide a support role for state based business development and promotion activities.
  • Community engagement: Engage with local community, organisations and people to promote AFL SR's programs and services.
  • Administration: Complete necessary administration accurately and on-time (e.g. records of trainee engagement).

  • Base salary between $60k and $65.5k per annum (commensurate with experience);

  • Additional 2 days of cultural leave for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander team members; and
  • Support for professional development, and opportunity to undertake accredited courses as part of AFL SR's Education arm.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

  • The position has been identified as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander position in accordance with the provisions of Section 14a of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.  Only people who identify as having Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage are illegible to apply for this position.
  • Relevant qualifications and/or sector experience;
  • Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people, preferably in a mentoring capacity;
  • Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community bodies and organisations;
  • Demonstrated understanding of the issues facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and young people;
  • A passion and motivation to support people to thrive through education and employment;
  • Demonstrated initiative, ability to work autonomously and sound judgement;
  • Demonstrated ability to follow systems and processes to maintain accurate records;
  • Working with Children's Check and Driver’s License.
