Deakin College (formerly known as MIBT) is a direct pathway to Deakin University, providing the experience that supports successful transition to further studies at the University.

The Role

The Student Learning Advisor works collaboratively with the Student Services and Academic teams in the development and provision of learning support to the diverse student body.

This role is responsible for development and implementation of strategies for language enhancement, assisting international students with the transition to study in an Australian learning environment, the development of appropriate study skills and counselling students on poor academic performance.

Essential

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline or equivalent practical experience in a related role within higher education industry or similar
  • Experience in the development and delivery of student academic support programs, preferably in a tertiary environment
  • Demonstrated evidence of the ability to teach academic skills to individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds, and to assess academic skills literacy
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills with a proven ability to consult and liaise with a wide range of people from diverse range of backgrounds
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and to manage conflicting priorities and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment and contribute to the development and delivery of strategies aimed at improving student learning outcomes
  • Commitment to providing a quality customer service to students with a strong focus on accurate and timely advice
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, develop, promote, facilitate, monitor and evaluate learning programs or events
  • Competency using Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and willingness and ability to quickly adapt to new computer systems/programs

Desirable

  • Experience in working in a higher education environment
  • Qualification or experience in teaching students English as a second language
  • Knowledge of Education Services for Overseas Students Act 2000 and National Code (2007)
