The University of Newcastle Department of Rural Health delivers a number of programs aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of regional, rural and Indigenous communities within the New England, North West Slopes and Plains, Mid North Coast and areas of the Hunter Valley and Manning Rivers regions.

Through a variety of programs the UONDRH has made it possible for undergraduate and postgraduate students studying medicine, nursing and allied health disciplines at the University of Newcastle & through the Joint Medical Program to complete a large part of their education and training in a rural setting at one of six locations – Tamworth, Armidale, Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour, Moree and Taree.

About the opportunity

The Clinical Dean, Manning Clinical School (MCS) is responsible for ensuring that all teaching and supervision delivered and provided through the MCS is in line with the learning outcomes of the Joint Medical Program (JMP). The Clinical Dean is responsible for the professional behaviour and performance of the Rural Clinical Training & Support Project (RCTS) staff and students who are based at the Manning Clinical School of the University of Newcastle Department of Rural Health (UONDRH)

The Clinical Dean will hold a leadership role in the cultivation of quality research and its supervision, contributing both to the education of student and locally based medical practitioners. The Clinical Dean will hold a leadership role within the JMP ensuring that rural practice, learning and support of rural students is considered in all planning and delivery.

This opportunity is offered on a Part-Time (3 days per week), Fixed Term up to and including 31 December 2020. The position could be combined with a clinical role or research interest. This position is located in the Manning Education Centre, adjacent to Manning Rural Referral Hospital, which is a 199 bed hospital in Taree NSW

Skills and experience required for this role:

Essential Criteria:

  1. Be registered to work as a Medical Practitioner in Australia
  2. Have a recognised medical specialist qualification, or General Practice certification.
  3. Have experience and demonstrated ability in academic and clinical leadership, including:
    • Clinical skills teaching and learning within a Clinical School setting
    • Managing the support needs of staff and students
    • Human and physical resource management including performance appraisal.
    • Have effective interpersonal and communication skills including capacity to liaise and negotiate with a broad range of interest groups.
  4. Have a proven record of working collaboratively with clinicians and in a multidisciplinary context.
  5. Demonstrate a solid understanding and commitment to rural medicine

Desirable Criteria:

  1. Be eligible to apply for appointment as a clinician at Manning Rural Referral Hospital.
  2. Have a commitment to quality assurance and clinical excellence.
  3. Demonstrate commitment to scholarly work and an active research profile (conference presentations, research publications and grant funding).

Academic Level C plus full clinical loading (pro-rated for part time) plus contributory superannuation with Unisuper attracting a generous employer contribution of 17%.
