About the role

Due to recent and substantial growth over the past 18 month, they are now looking to appoint a new Merchandise Manager. Reporting to the General Manager of Merchandise, you will identify and manage potential improvement opportunities and projects for the range as well as overseeing the continuous improvement of current ranges. You will also be charged with defining and executing the product strategy including the core messaging and positioning of the products and creation of training tools.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Budget and pricing management across Product Sales, Margin and market penetration
  • Management and delivery of product development and range improvement projects
  • Work closely within internal stakeholders ensure continuous sales and margin growth of products in stores.
  • Develop sales and product training tools
  • Brief and train customers at product launch presentation
  • Pricing Strategy and position
  • Range Strategy including Private label penetration
  • Lead the direction of the merchandise function including identification and implementation of business improvement systems to maintain a competitive edge, simplify processes, improve speed to market and reduce costs
  • Manage, develop and train the merchandise team and provide an ongoing learning culture and succession plan
  • Drive Category Manager implementation of range reviews ensuring coverage of range, breadth, depth and brands to meet the needs of professional tool users
  • Range management including private brands, supplier negotiations, market size analysis, focus groups, competitive reviews, exit strategies and space management
  • Develop and implement a National pricing strategy
  • Develop and foster strong strategic supplier partnerships, conduct regular reviews with senior management and implement short and long-range growth plans with key suppliers
  • Migration of suppliers to EDI
  • Improvement in DIFOT
  • Reduction in obsolete levels
  • Range recommendation and stock requirements for new stores
  • Continually manage and monitor the performance of all direct reports including regularly updating performance to KPI’s

Skills & Experience

  • Tertiary level qualification in a relevant field such as business, marketing or engineering
  • Proven success as a Business Manager or Merchandise Manager in a National retail environment
  • Strong commercial acumen including supplier management and negotiation capabilities
  • Proven leadership and influencing skills
  • Strategic and tactical business abilities
  • Sound ability to develop, coach and manage a large team
  • Capability to implement change management strategies
  • Proven ability to think beyond today and deliver tomorrows innovation
  • Ability to work strategically but also granular - have a hands on, roll your sleeves up approach
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Excellent negotiation skills, project management skills and commercial nouse
  • Prior experience within a Retail or Franchise business is ideal, but not essential
  • Prior experience sourcing products from overseas (e.g. China or Taiwan) is ideal, but not essential
  • Foster a culture that promotes innovation, collaboration, empowerment, success and support within the department and overall support office
