Detail information about job Centre for Doctoral Training in Medical Devices (4 year studentship) for Engineers and Physical Scientists. Terms and conditions vacancy

Doctor of Engineering in Medical Devices (EngD)

We are currently recruiting a graduate in Engineering or the Physical Sciences for September 2017 who has obtained, or expects to obtain, a first or upper second class honours degree to join the Medical Devices Centre for Doctoral Training at the University of Strathclyde, which is funded by the EPSRC. The student will work with the Fraunhofer Centre for Applied Photonics (FCAP, a not for profit research and technology organisation), clinicians from the NHS and University researchers from the Institute of Photonics and the Department of Chemistry on the following project.

DNA/photonic device for the sensitive detection of cardiovascular biomarkers: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the number one cause of death and disability in the UK and the health system faces increasing occurrences of the disease. There is an urgent need for efficient assessment of patient risk so that treatment can be provided in a targeted, proactive and affordable way. An approach for the read out, in a simple manner and at the point of care, of biological indicators (biomarkers) that are expressed at different levels according to the disease state would enable this. The aim of this project is therefore to develop a hybrid DNA/photonic technology that matches or exceed the performance of existing platforms for the detection of clinically relevant CVD biomarkers.

Graduates accepted for the centre who are UK citizens will receive a four-year studentship covering living expenses and fees. EU citizens who have been resident in the UK for 3 years or more are also eligible for the full studentship. Fees only support is available for other EU citizens.
