The National Institute of Demographic and Economic Analysis (NIDEA) is the only social sciences research institute in a New Zealand university focussed specifically on demography, population economics and population geography. NIDEA researchers are well known nationally and internationally for their research excellence.
Applications are invited for a continuing Professorial position in one or more of the following areas - demography, population studies, migration studies or economics. The successful applicant will have an excellent record of academic leadership in research, teaching and supervision of postgraduate research. Upon appointment, the Professor will also be expected to be Director of NIDEA for a three year term. The Director role will include primary leadership and management responsibility for all Institute staff; for the Institute’s strategic direction, project management, funding and financial activities; as well as for the Institute’s academic research, teaching and supervision activities.
The appointee will play a major role in continuing the development of NIDEA, including assuming overall responsibility for establishing and maintaining meaningful relationships with the leaders of cognate research institutes, other relevant unit leaders such as Directors, Deans and Chairpersons within the university, leaders in relevant agencies in New Zealand, and overseas and external stakeholders and end-users.
NIDEA is a Research Institute which depends for most of its funding on external research grants. As a Professor and Director you will have a strong research profile which includes a track record of leading large-scale research programmes. You will also have experience of working with multi-disciplinary research teams on externally funded programmes and will play a major role in supporting bids for new research grants from such sources as the Marsden Fund, the Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment, the Health Research Council and the National Science Challenge as well as international funding agencies.
A PhD in one of the following areas is required - demography, population studies, migration studies, economics or other relevant discipline.
Salary will be dependent on qualifications, skills and experience. The Professorial scale commences at NZ$135,000 per year.
