You will work as part of a professional service delivery team dedicated to the provision of an efficient, effective and quality driven research computing service to staff and students within the Academic Research and Learning and Teaching functions of the University. Reporting to the ARCCA Senior High End Computing (HEC) Engineer, your main function will be to manage and develop the operational delivery of the Supercomputing Wales High Performance Computing (HPC) hub at Cardiff in support of the academic research community across the Pan Wales consortium. You will be responsible for the administration of the hub system on a day to day basis, ensuring a consistently high quality of service focused on enabling the computational research objectives of the Supercomputing Wales consortium universities. You will employ excellent communication skills within the team, as well as the enthusiasm and technical knowledge required to deliver a world class research computing facility in a demanding, customer-focused, academic environment. Supercomputing Wales is a strategic programme of investment in Higher Education intended to change the way supercomputer facilities are used to support research activities in Wales. The programme is led by Cardiff University, in a consortium with Aberystwyth, Bangor and Swansea Universities, and HPC Wales Ltd. With an estimated total cost of close to £15m, the programme will fund the purchase and running of new High Performance Computing (HPC) equipment, with two new hubs at Cardiff and Swansea universities, along with necessary technical posts to support the operation of the equipment. The programme will also support a new cohort of ‘Research Software Engineers’ to work with academic researchers to develop software codes and algorithms using the supercomputing facilities.  The programme targets include capturing more research funding for Wales, creating more highly-skilled research jobs, and increasing collaborations with other research-active partners, all built on improved HPC capacity provided through Supercomputing Wales. The programme is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund via Welsh Government (ca. £9m in total), and by the university partners. This position is full-time and is fixed term until 30 June 2020The role holder will provide a highly professional, friendly and customer focused face to the services offered by University IT. You will take responsibility for: • The development of technology and infrastructure designs and specifications, including the documentation of architectures, topologies and configuration items. • The specification and development of user/system interfaces, including validation and error correction procedures, processing rules, access, security and audit controls. You will assess associated risks, and specify recovery routines and contingency procedures. You will also assist with the translation of logical designs into physical designs. • The provision of infrastructure maintenance and support services, both to users of the systems and to service delivery functions. You will pro-actively monitor system performance, investigating and resolving faults and problems in a timely fashion.
