Please be advised that due to a new minimum salary threshold of £30,000 per annum imposed by the UKVI, this post may not qualify for University sponsorship under Tier 2 of the points based system.  You will join a research team developing new optogenetic tools for manipulating neuronal activity. Specifically, we are following up on our recent success in creating a tool to drive chloride out of neurons. Given the importance of chloride levels in dictating the efficacy of neuronal inhibition, this new tool has many potential applications throughout the nervous system. Newcastle is one of the leading centres for neuroscience research in the UK, with particular expertise in epilepsy, brain-machine interface studies, and mitochondrial research amongst others. You will have a PhD in cellular/network neuroscience or epilepsy and a strong academic background in molecular biology, with experience of plasmid manipulation, culture work (preferably neuronal cultures) and transfection techniques. Experience of electrophysiology and understanding of cellular neuroscience and optogenetics is highly desirable. You will work independently and as part of a team, collecting and analysing data, communicating research and preparing papers, and will have a track record of peer-reviewed journal publications. Programming abilities, mathematical skills and/or electronics experience are desirable. This post is tenable for up to 3 years.
