About Us

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe’s largest research organisations. We’re trusted to support, enable and undertake pioneering projects in an amazing diversity of fields. Through world-class facilities and people, we’re driving ground-breaking advances in science and technology.

We deliver world class research, innovation and skills for the UK. We combine world-class facilities including the Central Laser Facility, the Hartree Centre, ISIS and RAL Space, with major international collaborations with organisations such as CERN and some of the world’s most talented staff. Our Laboratories at Harwell, Oxfordshire and Daresbury, Cheshire are positioned at the heart of a joint venture initiative to stimulate innovation and growth.

About The Role

Scientists from the UK and China are working together to carry out Ion acceleration and THz studies from laser driven plasma sources using High Power Laser facilities like Vulcan and Gemini. There is a fixed-term post in the experimental science section that facilitates these.  We are looking for a highly skilled experimental physicist with relevant experience to enable scientists to be trained to utilise these cutting-edge world-class facilities and deliver new science.

Your main role would be delivering experiments by coordinating and managing a team of Chinese/EU scientists and engineers including external users and PhD students. You will undertake planning and safe execution of experiments with full responsibility for the experimental cycle. In order to grow the scientific quality of the research, you will be expected to develop and pursue innovative development programmes and research activities in Laser driven Ion acceleration and THz studies.

Some experimental testing, calibration and preparation work may need to be coordinated and carried out in China.

The role requires excellent planning and communication skills, fluency in Chinese and English and requires you to be self-motivated with a strong interest and proven track record of conducting/proposing Ion acceleration and THz plasma physics research of the highest calibre.

About You

You will have a PhD in experimental Ion acceleration and THz production using laser-plasmas, or equivalent research experience.

It is essential that you have strong practical skills and experience of delivering high power laser-plasma experiments as well as having experience of developing computer-controlled equipment/diagnostics.

You will have experience managing Scientists and Engineers and have previous experience in the management of projects. It is beneficial if you also have experience of presenting to large communities, senior audiences and the public.

You must have the ability to communicate effectively in English and Chinese and will also be required to travel internationally on a regular basis.

Benefits

An exceptional index linked pension scheme, 30 days leave allowance and flexible working are offered.
