The Roslin Institute
A post-doctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr Ross Houston to develop and apply new genomic tools for sea bass and sea bream. The post is within the Division of Genetics and Genomics at The Roslin Institute, University of Edinburgh.
The post is part of an EU-funded project targeting improvements in Mediterranean aquaculture. This post will involve (i) co-ordination of whole genome resequencing of samples from populations of farmed bass and bream, and analyses of the data to discover single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), and (ii) creation and testing of a genotyping platform for these species to facilitate and test genomic selection. The post will involve a combination of molecular biology laboratory experiments, bioinformatic analyses and project management.
The successful candidate will be expected to have a PhD or be near to completing a PhD in a related field (i.e. genetics / bioinformatics). He/she will be require extensive laboratory experience (molecular biology, preparation of samples for Illumina sequencing), and extensive experience of analysing high throughput sequence data for the purposes of SNP discovery. Project management experience and a track record of successful oral and written communication of scientific results in a related field are also essential.
This post will offer the opportunity to work in a rapidly developing area of aquaculture genomics and selective breeding. The successful candidate will have the chance to collaborate with leading researchers in the field and to present results at (inter)national meetings and conferences.
This post is available immediately on a fixed term basis, with a working pattern of 35 hours per week for 18 months with the possibility of extension.
