Detail information about job PhD Studentship: Understanding a Photonic Crystal Biosensor. Terms and conditions vacancy
The research in my group is focused on developing biosensors. Generally speaking, the biosensors (e.g. photonic crystals) that we are developing could be described as optical cavities made of soft porous materials where trapped light interacts with (bio)chemistry of interest. The changes in the resonance of the cavity is measured to determine the analytical concentration in (typically, biological) samples. The aim of this PhD project is to understand the underlying physics governing the operation of a photonic crystal biosensor to improve its performance (e.g. limit of detection and sensitivity). The project will involve the use of commercially available software packages (e.g. COMSOL or R-Soft) and in-house written programme to study the physics governing the operation of a photonic crystal sensors. The student will work alongside postdoctoral research fellows who will study the photonic crystal sensor via experiments. The results obtained via different modelling approaches and experiments will be compared, and findings will be used to design an improved photonic crystal biosensor.
