Project Description

The evaporation of droplets in contact with a surface (sessile drops) and similarly thin films, perform essential roles across a wide range of process industries and end-user applications. In general, the liquids involved are complex formulations containing active ingredients, binders, dispersants, adjuvants, polymers, etc. The function of the dry deposit formed depends critically on the morphology, distribution and phase of these components, yet the development of structure in evaporating sessile droplets and films is poorly understood. The overall aim of the studentship is to contribute towards the development of a predictive understanding of the drying of droplets and thin films in relation to both manufacturing processes and end-user applications.

In a wider context the work will be informed and supported by a broad and comprehensive body of experimental work in the same area and the successful applicant will join a busy and productive multidisciplinary research team of collaborative researchers from Chemistry and Chemical Engineering based at the Universities of Bristol, Durham and Leeds working on a large EPSRC funded project under the general heading of “Evaporative Drying of Droplets and the Formation of Micro-structured and Functional Particles and Films”.

Project Specifics and Training

  • The project will provide the holder of the studentship with specialist training in the use and development of state-of-the-art numerical and computational methods. S/he will master a range of cutting edge modelling and numerical/computational techniques, all of which represent an attractive and widely transferable skill set.
  • Excellent multidisciplinary training in an area of crucial scientific and industrial important to the academic community and industry at large. The individual involved will become a research scientist/engineer in their own right, taking ownership of their project and becoming an expert in the field of interest.
  • Active involvement in the preparation of research articles and publications and promoting the research outcomes widely by contributing to progress meetings, and the attendance/involvement in seminars, workshops and conferences organised both nationally and internationally.

Eligibility and Funding Notes

Applicants will need to be in possession of a undergraduate degree at a 2:1 honours level or above in a discipline directly relevant to the research area – in this sense applications are invited from graduates in Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, Process), Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science and related subjects. Applications from individuals with existing experience in one or more of the following topics are encouraged: Fluid Mechanics, Mathematical Modelling, Numerical Methods, Computer Programming, High Performance Computing, CFD Software Tools. The studentship is open to UK nationals, available immediately for up to 3.5 years and will be based in Durham.

Day-to-day research supervision and training will be provided by Dr S Veremieiev and Professor P H Gaskell; in a wider, less formal, context by the research team as a whole.
