Funding for: Full-time UK/EU students for 3.5 years (or partial fee waiver over 3 years for overseas students), commencing 1 October 2017.

Award: Total £18,728 per annum tax free bursary with annual increment (this figure includes the UK/EU tuition fee £4,195, living allowance £14,533; in addition to this there will be access to a training fund for travel/equipment). 

Note: overseas students must be able to meet the difference between fees at £17,510 and the home/EU bursary level of £4,195.

Hours: Full-time (20 days holiday allowance). As part of the PhD we ask you to sign up for practical class assistance in UG and MSc lab sessions, offering circa six hours per week additional paid income.

Topic: We are looking for outstanding individuals with a passion for computing and communications who can share their enthusiasm and talents for innovative research and enjoy the exciting challenges of working across different discipline areas.

Lancaster is a top ten research intensive university, and enjoys a vast green-field site with wonderful views of mountains and sea, yet the campus is just 5 minutes' drive from the M6 motorway and ten minutes from the main West Coast railway with direct services to Manchester, London, and Scotland.

Specific PhD topics include:

  • Transformation of Energy Efficiency through Smart Building Temperature Control
  • Physical Uncloneable Functions related to Physics and Cyber Security Computing (supported by US Air Force Office of Scientific Research)
  • Security and Shape Changing Interfaces for the Internet of Things (IoT)
  • Pervasive Health Environments connected with Data Science, Trust and Information Sharing
  • Networked and Connected Devices and Infrastructure (TOUCAN project)
  • Efficient Video Streaming in the Future Internet
  • Data Driven Adaptive Service Orchestration in Internet of Things (IoT)
  • Privacy Preserving Distributed Systems Platforms for the IoT
  • Next Generation Display Environments for Future Smart Environments

All our research projects draw on multi-disciplinary environments, so we welcome applicants from computer science, communications, or related areas.

Requirements: First or upper-second class BSc (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline.

International applicants must also have IELTS [International English Language Testing System] score of 7+ (or equivalent).
