Detail information about job PhD Studentship: Design Optimization in the Presence of Topological Variations. Terms and conditions vacancy
Engineering design optimisation problems employing expensive simulations typically focus on the optimization of a set of real numbers defining geometric parameters, such as thicknesses, heights or spline control points, of a fixed topology. The topology is typically fixed from either previous experience or as a result of a low fidelity conceptual design study and may therefore lead to a sub-optimal design. In order to achieve the best performing design both the topology and the sizing parameters defining that topology should be varied simultaneously.
The following PhD studentship, fully funded by Rolls-Royce Plc., aims to counter these issues by developing schemes for the efficient optimisation of engineering systems in the presence of topological variations. The successful candidate would preferably have a 1st class engineering or applied mathematics degree, ideally with experience of one or more of design optimisation algorithms, programming and structural design. If you wish to discuss any details of the project informally, please contact Dr. David Toal, Computational Engineering & Design Group, Email: [email protected], Tel: +44 (0) 2380 59 7662.
