Applications are invited for a full-time Senior Research Fellow within the Future of Humanity Institute (FHI) at the University of Oxford. The post is fixed-term for 24 months from the date of appointment.

Reporting to the Director of Research at the Future of Humanity Institute, the successful candidate will be responsible for identifying crucial considerations for improving humanity’s long-run potential. The Senior Research Fellow will be responsible for evaluating strategies that could reduce existential risk, particularly with respect to the long-term outcomes of technologies such as artificial intelligence. The postholder will be based at the FHI, Littlegate House, St Ebbe’s Street, Oxford.

The postholder’s main responsibilities will include: guiding the development of research agenda within the specific context of existential risk and artificial intelligence strategy and conducting individual research; collaborating with partner institutions and research groups; writing research articles for peer-reviewed publications and presenting papers at national and international conferences; raising research funds; hiring researchers, as required, and establishing clear task objectives; shaping and advancing FHI’s research strategy; generating original ideas by analysing detailed qualitative and quantitative data, and building on existing concepts as well as representing the FHI at external meetings/seminars.

Applicants will be familiar with existing literature in existential risk and related fields, or will have other equivalent evidence of outstanding research capability. He or She will have a strong track record of publication and should have evidence of high level management of a research project. Interdisciplinary research experience may be an advantage, but not essential.
