The prestigious Aston Prize PhD studentship is jointly funded by Lloyds Banking Group plc., Aston University and Aston Business School. The PhD student will be affiliated to the Lloyds Banking Group Centre for Business Prosperity (LBBP). The objective of the Centre is to enhance understanding of what affects UK economic performance at the level of the individual, the firm, the region, the industrial sector and the nation overall, within global comparative perspectives.

Technological revolution has dramatically increased productivity and improved welfare for the society. However, the implications of such progress on industrial change, labour and wage, and their distributions across groups of individuals, businesses, and regions are far from being clear. On the one hand, technology and automation undoubtedly improved productive efficiency and led to more labour training and skill upgrading. On the other hand, labour saving by technological advancement help keeping labour cost low which may discourage investments in labour-saving technology, hence potentially reducing productivity growth. This technology-productivity paradox is of key significance to the UK economy and closely relevant to the research themes of the LBB

We call for applicants of a full-time funded student to work under the research stream II of the Centre, under the supervision of LBBP leading academics that focuses on skill challenges, productivity and prosperity in the UK. The objective of this studentship is to conduct innovative and well-grounded research on related topics of industrial structural change, skills and productivity at individual, firm, local and national level in the UK, within global perspectives.

We welcome applications from students with an MSc in Economics, Business or Management with strong, proven, quantitative skills and an interest in working with individual and firm level data. Informal enquiries about the research or studentship prior to application are welcome, and can be directed to Professor Jun Du ([email protected]).
