Job DescriptionAre you a software developer or engineer looking for an exciting opportunity?

We are looking for a talented Java and Ruby on Rails developer. You will join the Literature Services team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) located at the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.

The Literature Services Team leads the development and maintenance of Europe PMC, a large repository of over 32 million full text biomedical research articles and abstracts. These records are supplemented with links to biological databases, citation networks, and semantic annotation. Europe PMC is funded by 27 funders of biological and biomedical research across Europe, led by the Wellcome Trust.

At EMBL-EBI, we help scientists realise the potential of ‘big data’ in biology by enabling them to exploit complex information to make discoveries that benefit mankind. Working for EMBL-EBI gives you an opportunity to apply your skills and energy for the greater good. As part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), we are a non-profit, intergovernmental organisation funded by 22 member states and two associate member states and proud to be an equal-opportunity employer. We are located on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK, and our 600 staff are engineers, technicians, scientists and other professionals from all over the world.

Unix/Linux command line skills, shell scripting and common command-line tools are always in demand as is experience with development tools: Git, issue tracking software (JIRA). 'Traditional' compute-farm processing (LSF/SGE) or next-generation processing frameworks (Hadoop/Luigi) will be an advantage.

Good communication is crucial to the success of our projects, so you need to be able to maintain good working relationships and build new ones. The ability to work independently, efficiently and within defined deadlines is expected, but what we are really looking for is commitment to delivering high-quality public services for the advancement of science.
