The university is looking to recruit a highly experienced and motivated industrialist with academic background or academic with extensive industrial experience to contribute to a team implementing the £35m IMPACT (Innovative Materials, Processing and Numerical Technologies) Operation’s priority of driving innovation within Advanced Engineering and Materials, Wales’ Smart Specialisation Grand Challenge area, in a new purpose built facility with state-of-the art equipment, world-leading academics and researchers.
IMPACT – Innovative Materials, Processing And numeriCal Technologies - is a £35m Operation establishing a semi-autonomous Research Institute in the College of Engineering operating out of a newly constructed and fully equipped building occupied by a newly recruited team over 200 staff of academics and researchers adding capacity and capability to the College of Engineering’s nationally and internationally recognised existing REF research strengths mainly in Materials Engineering and Computer Engineering Modelling and also in related fields.
The College of Engineering is receiving funding for IMPACT from the European Regional Development Funds. IMPACT provides a sustainable, highly competitive, world-class resource and capacity in Materials, Processing and Numerical Technologies, driving innovation within Advanced Engineering and Materials, Wales’ Smart Specialisation Grand Challenge area. Current research funding opportunities aligned to these sectors amount to approximately £1.2bn. IMPACT will build the capacity of the College to be able to more successfully compete for such funding.
A key objective of IMPACT is to secure an additional £24.6m of research funding over the duration of the Operation until 2022.
The post-holder will chair the Operation’s External Advisory Board (EAB), which will provide independent and impartial advice to the Operation’s Scientific Steering Group in order to help shape the Operation’s research strategy, to provide horizon scanning, to ensure close fit with industrial demands and funding calls, and to significantly increase its success in meeting and exceeding ambitious targets and objectives. The long term economic impact is estimated to be £2.2bn.
The post-holder will be part of the governance structure in place to ensure that research challenges set out in roadmaps, by EPSRC, Innovate UK, the Horizon 2020 programme or industry roadmaps and emerging megatrends are being addressed, and funding will be attracted.
One important aspect of this work is the engagement with funders and policy makers to establish close working relationships for the successful delivery of IMPACT.
The post-holder will be expected to contribute to the development and expansion of activities in the following areas:
- Future manufacturing technologies
- Next generation materials property measurement
- Advanced structural mechanics
- Vapour deposition
- Metal technology
