The International Public Health Department is seeking a PDRA to join the CRU's multidisiplinary team
The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) is an internationally recognised centre of excellence for research in tropical diseases. Through the creation of effective links with governments, organisations and institutions and by responding to the health needs of communities, LSTM aims to promote improved health, particularly for people of the less developed/resource poorest countries in the tropics and sub-tropics.
The Department of International Public Health is pleased to announce a unique opportunity for an experienced Post-Doctoral Research Assistant to join the Capacity Research Unit's (CRU) multi-disciplinary team. The purpose of this role is to lead on the implementation of the CRU's role in LSTM's NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Lung Health and Tuberculosis in Africa and play a central role in the development and evolution of this exciting and innovative large-scale, multidisciplinary initiative to build research capacity and improve health outcomes in low and middle income countries. The NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Lung Health and Tuberculosis in Africa is an LSTM-led research programme under the directorship of Professor Bertie Squire. It will conduct collaborative research across the spectrum of applied health research disciplines and will involve 17 organisations across 11 African countries.
The CRU is led by Professor Imelda Bates who, along with her team, is responsible for research into the technical design, implementation and tracking of capacity strengthening activities in health and development programmes. The CRU teamwork in collaboration with funders of research and development projects, aswell as with researchers, implementers and decision-makers in many countries,predominantly in sub-Saharan Africa.
The post holder will play a key role in advancing knowledge about how to systematically strengthen the capacity of LMIC research institutions to undertake multi-disciplinary and applied health research. For high calibre applicants, opportunities are available to gain experience in research leadership and there are also opportunities for contributing to teaching and to supervising Masters level postgraduate research projects. It is essential that you hold a PhD in a relevant discipline and understand capacity strengthening and health systems programmes in developing countries, recognising the challenges around effectively measuring capacity building impact at all levels. You will be required to demonstrate initiative and enthusiasm in your approach to work,with proven communication skills. You must be able to analyse and present qualitative and quantitative data and translate research into practical lessons and recommendations. You will have excellent interpersonal skills and have a proven track record of working productively and co-operatively with academic and non-academic colleagues. Given the nature of the role, you must be available to undertake international travel and work flexibly to meet the demands of the role.
