Detail information about job Teaching Fellow in Sociology (2 posts). Terms and conditions vacancy

Contract Type: Full Time, Fixed Term (1 year)

Closing Date: 8 September 2017 (Midday)

Working Arrangements:  Both posts are full time but we will consider the scope to make job share and part-time appointments in order to identify the best candidates and fit with teaching needs.

The School is seeking to appoint 2 FTE teaching fellowships in Sociology to support the delivery of its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes during the academic year 2017/18. The posts will involve convenorship of modules, supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate taught dissertations, contributing of guest lectures and specialist support on a range of topics and support of the core functioning of our degree programmes through providing academic advice and undertaking academic-related administration. The postholders will report formally to the Head of School but will work on a day to day basis with the programme directors for Sociology, Criminology and Social Research Methods.

The School is specifically seeking to identify candidates with the subject knowledge and skills to convene and deliver teaching on modules in the following areas:

  • Perspectives in Sociology (a new undergraduate module from 2017/18 focusing on developing Sociological skills and approaches to research topics)
  • Research Methods in Action (a core level 2 Research Methods where input into workshops on qualitative methods will be required)
  • Sociology of Gender and Sexuality (a popular optional module within our undergraduate Sociology programme)
  • Sociological Imaginations (Core Sociological Theory to our undergraduate programme)
  • Introductory Statistics Practical delivery on core undergraduate and postgraduate modules

The successful candidates will demonstrate a clear fit with at least 2 of these subject areas and will join a growing School which is refocusing its identity around a Sociological core.

The post of Teaching Fellow will involve a significant teaching load, including during the summer period, and there may be related scholarship and the opportunity for administrative duties which relate to education and pedagogy. The posts are intended to provide cover during a period of sustained recruitment to permanent academic positions. These posts are therefore for a fixed term of 1 year and it is not anticipated that the posts will be extended beyond this fixed term.

Successful applicants will, ideally, be in post by 1st October at the latest.
