Detail information about job Research Associate -Fixed Term Contract. Terms and conditions vacancy

Exciting opportunities to undertake research have arisen in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Bath. Candidates are invited to apply for a Research Associate (PDRA) positions for an EPSRC project ‘Future Advanced Metrology Hub’.

Advances in future manufacturing precision will require subsystems to be integrated so as to achieve optimum overall performance. These will include front end manufacturing subsystems for machining, additive layup, and assembly, together with advanced metrology networks under multi-input multi output feedback control. These networks will contain optic-based components for non-contact measurement over significant length scales, together with other local transducer systems. The key to success is to achieve the system integration through active control of each subsystem.

The PDRAs will therefore be engaged in sub-areas for future advanced metrology research including:

  • measurement systems based on non-contact principles (based for example on optics, eddy currents, capacitance)
  • networks of measurement systems including their compensation for environment disturbances such as temperature, humidity, vibration
  • manufacturing systems for subtractive and additive manufacture
  • robotic systems to achieve automation of manufacturing processes
  • geometric modelling
  • dynamic system modelling
  • closed loop control of manufacturing processes based on measurement results

They will also engage with a range of collaborating industrial partners, including GKN Aerospace, Airbus, Rolls-Royce and other innovative manufacturers of advanced products.

Candidates should have a degree and PhD in a relevant discipline (Mechanical Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Physics, Mathematics) with an enthusiastic and creative research mind.

These posts are full time (36.5 hours per week) and are being offered on fixed term contracts for up to 36 months.

Interviews are anticipated to take place in September 2017.

Please contact Professor Patrick Keogh (Professor of Machine Systems) for informal enquiries: [email protected]
